Ancestors

Posted by Bear OneFlower on October 9, 2011 at 12:21pm 1 Comment

What do you think when you hear the word Ancestor? Do you think of someone who lived long ago? Ancestors are not just those that were born before us, they are those that have passed before us.

This weekend was the 7th anniversary of my Goddess-son's passing. Shane was only 2 years old when he passed, and he was my heart and soul, the absolute light in my life. Yesterday I celebrated the 4th birthday of his little sister, Autumn. Shane was most certainly present among the living guests…

Myths and Legends of the Moon

 Lunar Folklore

The moon is, in terms of distance, the closest heavenly body to earth. We can see it in the sky for three weeks out of four, and people have, for thousands of years, used its light to guide them in the dark. In addition to the personification of the moon as deity, there are all kinds of fascinating legends and myths associated with the moon and its cycles.

  • The word lunatic comes from the Latin luna, because it was believed that people were more likely to exhibit aberrant behavior during a full moon. Although studies have been done showing that emergency room visits and accidents are increased during the full moon period, there has yet to be conclusive evidence for causation.
  • The moon seems to have an effect on animals as well as people. A Florida expert on animal behavior reports that hamsters spin in their wheels far more aggressively during the moon's full phase. Deer and other herbivores in the wild tend to ovulate at the full moon, and in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the full moon is mating time for coral.
  • The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson, was inspired by the strange -- and yet very true -- case of Charles Hyde, a London man who committed a series of crimes at the time of the full moon.
  • There is a British legend that if Christmas fell on the day of a dark Moon, the following year's harvest would be a bountiful one. Some parts of the British Isles believed that a waxing moon on Christmas meant a good crop the next fall, but a waning moon indicated a bad one would come.
  • In some countries, a halo around the moon means bad weather is coming.
  • The first time you see a crescent moon for the month, take all your spare coins out of your pocket, and put them in the other pocket. This will ensure good luck for the next month.
  • Some people believe that the fifth day after a full moon is the perfect time to try to conceive a child.
  • In some Chinese religions, offerings are made to the ancestors on the night of a full moon.
  • In some Native American legends, the moon is held captive by a hostile tribe. A pair of antelope hope to rescue the moon and take it the village of a good tribe, but Coyote, the trickster, interferes. The antelope chase Coyote, who tosses the moon into a river each night, just out of reach of the antelope.
  • The night of the full moon is believed to be a good time for divination and scrying.

Poppet Magick

A poppet is a doll. It is the shape of a human that is used for magical purposes. They are used in spells to help either you or someone else. These dolls can be made from wood, cloth, clay, paper, or fabric. Do not make poppets of other people unless you have permission. Do not destroy the poppet. If it represents another person, give it to that person to keep it safe. If it was made for binding, bury it. Poppets can be used for many reasons, the two most common are Healing and Binding - this week we'll be looking at both. To Make a Poppet You will need: Clay or cloth Personal items of the person Red candle Holy water White linen In the doll, add anything you find that is personal to the person (nail clippings, written paper, hair etc.) Bless all of the items you are using to make our doll, create a clear mental image in your mind as you concentrate on the persona while you are making the doll. To reinforce you concentration keep repeating the following affirmation: "(name), as you I see (name) you represent to me." Continue this chanting and visualization until the doll is completed. Lay the doll on the altar with a red candle. Place both hands over the doll and will your energy to flow as you chant 3, 5 or 9 times: "Though separate you are, you are linked as one. As (name) your life has begun." Pass both sides of the finished doll through the flame of the red candle saying: "With fire do I consecrate this doll as (name)." Sprinkle both sides of doll with holy water and say: "With water do I consecrate this doll as (name)" Pass both sides of the doll through the incense smoke as you say: "With air do I consecrate this doll as (name)" Keep the doll wrapped in clean white linen until it is ready to be used in the ritual.

Herb remedies for the common cold!

Someone with a persistent cough might consider sage. Boil some fresh water and steep this herb in it for at least 20 minutes. Anyone with the patience to wait could let it steep for nearly an hour, for added effectiveness. The resulting brew could be drunk hot or cold - someone with a sore throat may prefer the soothing option of a hot drink. Head congestion sufferers may benefit from steeping fenugreek in boiled water for five minutes. This should be drunk while still warm. While not precisely herbal, tissues with lotion will help prevent soreness from all that nose blowing while waiting for the symptoms to subside. Anyone nauseated from coughing or some other symptom should try steeping two tablespoons of freshly grated ginger in three cups of boiled water. Unlike the above remedies, this should not be drunk. Instead, the ill person should gargle it, or soak a hand towel in the mixture and put it on his or her head while resting. This is an effective remedy for an upset stomach. Painful chest congestion is another unfortunate staple of the cold season. Try steeping the herbs mullein or lobelia in boiled water. Soak a hand towel with the mixture while it is still warm, and then place it on the chest of the cold sufferer while he or she relaxes. Herbal experts recommend taking the herbal antibiotic echinacea during the cold and flu season to help prevent anyone from getting sick in the first place. And of course no one should forget chicken soup. Not only does it prevent dehydration, it actually can ease chest congestion - not to mention it being a great comfort food for someone suffering from the common cold.
